Race, Class and Gender


Introduction
The following paper analyses the different sociological perspectives with respect to race, class and even gender. To achieve this goal, two persons of different races are interviewed to analyses how these aspects influence their lives as well as answer meaningful questions regarding how the different components in these individuals’ cultures affect these people in the way that they relate to their stratified positions in the society.

Therefore it can be noted with concerned that these several social aspects that can be stratified at different levels surrounding one’s life are key factors in the determination of a person’s sociological setup.

Identification of the respondent’s race, class and gender.
In this paper two people were identified in this case. To gain a more profound insight in making the following analysis, these people were considered: different races and different social classes. One of my interviewees was a person of Native American origin, a person of middle class and a female by gender. My other interviewee was a male person by gender, of African race and a lower class person under social stratification.

The role of class, race and gender in the lives of the individuals interviewed and how such social stratifies play a role.
These different factors encompassing race, class and gender has both positive and negative influences on my interviewees. To begin with, race determines the different aspects of culture which is bound to influence people differently. In analyzing the person of African origin, it was notable that culture plays an imperative role in shaping morality and dictating the responsibility for each person in the society while in the Native American person, responsibility and attitude was greatly influenced. In summary, race class and gender have influenced the way people live their lives which can be seen through;
Morality
Under the African race, morals are to be observed under a strict manner. Respect for the elderly, respect for the opposite gender and the respect to one’s dignity form the basis for observing morality. The interviewee is constrained to behave in a manner that portrays respect and always good morals are a guiding factor when interacting with all members of the society. Additionally, for the Native American, morality is important as well. However, strict adherence to certain predefined ways of interaction with other members of the society is not present and freedom of choice and judgment is better manifested through the promotion of personal responses to different circumstances.
The different classes of my interviewees influenced their lives differently. For the middle class person, freedom is an imperative factor as compared to the lower class person. Their financial freedom ensures that they can dictate their own judgment of what is right and what is wrong without much discrimination as they are independent. On the other hand, for the lower income person, morality is viewed with a lot of significance as humility is a virtue due to humility brought about by financial and job insecurity.

However, under gender, morality is viewed as an important aspect under both cases.
Responsibilities
Responsibility was found to be a major factor that race has shaped as well. Having different races originated from different environments with different cultures and societal attitudes, responsibilities have been different despite the today’s convergence to certain generally accommodative ways. In the African interviewee, the man has the most responsibilities in the society of taking care of the family and the elder members of the society. However, with the Native American person, responsibilities are based on gender as well although in a less male chauvinistic manner by putting equal emphasis on responsibilities between the men and women.
Under classes, the middle class has more responsibilities owing to several interrelationships in the business environment and the family setup as well. These responsibilities arise due to the relationships developed in the process of acquiring wealth. Additionally, their wealth makes the society to place, more responsibilities upon them as they are able to provide finances for them. However, the lower class has relatively fewer responsibilities as their financial might is limited and thus they cannot be able to adequately respond to these responsibilities.
Gender, however discriminates on responsibility as more responsibilities especially on leadership are placed more on the male gender. The sociological setup emphasizes more on the male gender in allocating responsibilities as the man is viewed as the head of a family.

Beliefs
Both interviewees have beliefs developed through ages of interaction with their environment. These beliefs relate to religion, taboos, and other day to day activities within the people. Therefore these different races have over time retained different beliefs. It can therefore be noted that basically, class and race influences beliefs due to different places of origins unlike gender.
Customs
Customs involve the usual or the normal perceived way of doing things. Under the African race customs are many and usually give guidance on ways of life such as marriage, religious activities, law and order in the society as well as observance of occasions that are of utter significance in their history. Under the native America, the above mentioned customs are practiced under predefined ways that are in use up to today.
Different gender has a few differences in customs due to differences in physiology which affects these practices. However, most customs are common among both genders. Classes as well stratify customs due to the differences that arise with the different financial strengths between the middle class and lower class. The middle class are more accustomed to certain patterns of spending as they can afford purchasing many products while the lower class are limited and thus conform to ways that involve less consumption and savings as well.

An application of socio-conflict sociological perspective on the lives of the interviewed individuals.
The social conflict perspective views the social life as a competition which is a mechanism for the distribution of power and resources bad which therefore is responsible for inequality that can be viewed under different social stratifications. This perspective appears relevant as according to the interviewees, competitiveness in their environment is unavoidable.
The above perspective better explains the social differences found between the native African race and the African one, the lower and the middle class as well as the different gender. The middle class as well as the lower class are characterized by inter class competition which vary in the level of their intensity and therefore this explains the reasons why their social aspects differ. The middle class competed on factors regarding actualizing their needs and achieving greater things as compared to the lower income groups.
Under the different races competition and the achievement of different needs is based on the attitudes, customs and cultures present therefore this influences the social stratification aspect as different levels of social setups compete.
What are some the benefits and limitations to using interview as a research methodology?
Interviewing was the basic methodology used in this study. Therefore we look at the benefits and limitations of using interview to gather data in this respect.

Benefits;
Interviewing allows one to observe non-verbal information’s such as emotions in order to draw conclusions about truthfulness and the weight of the issue under question. Additionally, there is flexibility as the questions can be restructured and worded in a manner that will make the interview more insightful in collecting data. Interviewing also allows the clarification of information since both the interviewer and the interviewee are in direct contact. More so, the response rate is high since the interviewee avails himself to all his respondents and therefore obtains the information to the relevant respondents targeted. Again interviewing is a more appealing approach to the respondents as it motivates the respondent to provide information through direct conversation. Finally, the interviewee can dispel any fears that the respondent may have therefore obtaining more relevant and truthful information.
Limitations;
Interviewing has several limitations which include, the time and cost obligations that arise due to its nature. A lot of money is required in order to facilitate transport to meet respondents as well as time to achieve all this. Additionally, the training of the interviewee is needed which makes it costly to achieve the whole interviewing process. The quality of information gathered as well may be biased and therefore this means that it depends greatly on the expertise of the interviewee. The confidentiality of the interviewee is also not maintained and this means that getting secretive data can prove hard.
An analysis of each person’s components of culture and how it relates to the individuals social stratifications.
Middle class person;
The middle class have their own aspects of culture that greatly differ with the lower class person. The middle class have wealth and therefore struggle as much as they can to protect their privileges in the society. Their culture acquires a more competitive aspect due to the need to maintain freedom across all aspects, political, economic and social as well.
Their customs are more skewed towards improving their satisfaction through quality life while their behavior and responsibility is made to become accommodatable by all this class of people.

Lower class person;
The lower class person is generally viewed as disadvantaged in the society and therefore they seek and struggle to gain as much as they can in a bid to protect their minor interests. It is therefore noteworthy that the lower class adopt more protective measures to protect their rights and interests through movements and use of constitutionally made institutions to bring their rights to the limelight and avoid their exploitation by the middle class.
The lower class has strong beliefs as they form a basis for orderliness and equality in life. They have a stronger belief to morality as it is seen as a source of unity thereby acting as a factor in pursuing their interests.
Conclusion;
In conclusion, it can therefore be seen that different social stratifications arise due to differences in economic empowerment, beliefs and responsibilities as well. However, an understanding of the factors underlying this stratification is important in the analysis of the sociological perspectives as seen in this study.
