The poet Robert Frost said: A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom. Do you agree with him?

‘A poem begins with delight and ends with wisdom’ is a true statement that applies to any good poem. The source of the delight is from the skillful manner the author uses words to paint pictures and elicit emotions. The author also manipulates the language to create an effect. A poem that leaves the reader only delighted is incomplete. A good poem reveals profundity of thought. This insight does not have to convey some moral direction or a profound statement of truth. The poem ends in wisdom when it leaves the reader reflecting on associations between things. Wisdom and desire bond to make a poem that delights the intellect and endears to the heart (Sharma, 2011).

Frosts argument is poets are not recorders of real life events but artist. As an artist, a poet uses words to convey ideas and meaning. The poem therefore takes the reader and author to imaginary world where they experience delight. The delight is from the spontaneous imagination and the continuous flow of emotions and ideas. The delight ultimately must provide clarification to the reader thereby eliminating the confusion he or she is experiencing because of the spontaneous imagination and the continuous flow of emotions and ideas. This clarification provides insight into the real life experiences of the reader (Untermeyer, 2000). This influences the wisdom of the reader. The wisdom in a poem is more felt than seen. It is a revelation for both the poet and the reader. By using words to describe emotions, the poet ensures the reader feels what the persona in the poem is feeling.
