Increase in Discourtesy

The writer begins the essay by asking a rhetoric question about what happened to courtesy. This clearly gives the reader a peek of what the essay entails. The author goes further to explain the meaning of courtesy. In addition to the background information, the author gives an example of a discourteous experience in a parking lot where a woman leaves her cart behind another person’s vehicle.

This is evident from the examples given where the writer consistently complains about discourtesy from everyone despite the environment they are. The author’s thesis statement is located at the end of the first paragraph. It states that discourteous behavior seems to be increasing. The writer’s purpose is to point out the level of discourtesy in the society. The public is expected to learn how to be courteous at all times by replacing basic discourtesy with courtesy.
The examples given in the essay are supported by researches that were done earlier. For example, the recent survey carried out on the southern California drivers who showed that around 60 percent chased motorists who had offended them. Each paragraph is well detailed and interrelated. For every paragraph, there is a different experience. All examples are equally brought out in each body paragraph. There are no biases in either experience.
The question on whether more and more people are focusing on themselves supports the thesis statement. It shows that there is an increase in discourtesy level. The last paragraph that is the concluding paragraph is shorter since it summarizes the writer’s purpose of the essay. Also, it urges people to replace basic discourtesy with courtesy.
