Considering the materialistic nature of the world, they will live in as well as the technological bubble that defines them, Generation Alpha is likely to be more ambitious and adopt processes that apply technology. In this regard, they are likely to foster globalization and the growth of a global consensus on most issues of the day. Pollution and environmental degradation are likely to become a significant problem for the society. The material things require raw materials, which are scarce and expensive.
Too many products are liable to litter the world. However, sustainable means of production will have to be adopted to stem pollution and overexploitation of resources.
Generation Alpha will lead to an explosion in the technological industry, which might become the largest sector in most world economies. Content delivery in education systems will come to depend heavily on technical tools, and printed books are likely to lose their market share. For instance, their constant interaction with technological tools is likely to result in more efficient means of production. When the children grow up in an atmosphere that values technology, industrial processes will probably be robotized. Interaction on a physical basis is likely to reduce significantly since the Generation Alphas are likely to prefer more impersonal means of communication. The materialistic nature of the generation might start a cultural revolution, with more parents and members of society calling for a move back to the basics. They are likely to be a very impersonal people, and governments will have to come up with ways to involve them in political participation using technological tools. E-services will become the order of the day. Green technologies will become the order of the day. Companies such as Tesla will be the new Google, Amazon or Toyota.
Question 2
The backlash against consumerism will lead to active and negative outcomes. Some of the positive results are that manufacturers will make a lot of revenues, which will in turn lead to job creation and increased taxes for the government and society as a whole. Another positive is that the community will move towards more efficient means of production to manage the scarce resources and avoid instances of massive pollution through industrial processes. Since people will be spending most of their money on consumer goods and services, we are likely to witness a society that over-prioritizes materiality over other social goods such as helping the world’s poor. We are likely to have a world full of “vidiots” (video addicts). Advertising and too much interaction with multi-media devices will result in poor communication strategies as kids will lack a human approach to problems. They might think that more consumer goods will solve all the problems of the world.
Question 3
The literature on Generation Alpha suggests that literacy levels in the world will reduce dramatically. It is hoped that more world governments (especially those in the Third World) will be able to provide free primary education to its youth. Indeed, countries in Africa are slowly coming with policies to provide basic education to all and sundry. Third World countries will benefit the most from the input of Generation Alpha. They are likely to be less confrontational and more educated, and systems of governance might change for the better. The logic is that since the youth will be more informed about their role in a nation-state, they might hold their governments towards more accountability. Reliance on fossil fuels is also likely to reduce as better technology is developed to address the needs of society. The hold of religion on humanity is likely to dissipate. Technology will become the new religion, and mainstream religious ensembles will have to alter significantly their doctrines to attract Alpha generation.
