The Internship is an incredible one hour fifty-nine minutes movie that was produced by one of the best producers Vince Vaughn and Shawn Levy. It was directed Shawn Levy and edited by Dean Zimmerman (The Onion n.d.). The Internship was produced in the United States of America in 2013
and released on June 7th 2013. It is an English comedy movie that has a rating of 6.3 and with a lot of lessons to take home (The Onion n.d.). I got to know about the film through a friend of mine.
The movie is about two salesmen, Billy, and Nick, who work for a watch company that goes broke, and they lose their jobs. Billy goes ahead and applies for internship opportunities at Google for both of them. They secure an interview online, which they do at a nearby library, and they are lucky enough to join the Google program despite their answers revealing they are not experienced enough. When they get to Google, they learn they are the oldest of all interns, and they land on the same group as Stuart, who is always on his smartphone, Yo-Yo who was homeschooled, Neha and Lyle who is their team leader. On another team, there is a guy called Graham who consistently bullies Nick and Billy (20th Century n.d.).Mr. Chetty then asks the team to develop an app and Nick’s team decide to go out to a strip club. Amazingly, they get the most downloads, and this pushes them to the first position.
The next assignment is about a technical support hotline, and Billy does not feel prepared enough to ace this test. He gets tutorials from this intern, who wears headphones all the time, and he tells Billy his interaction skills are awesome and at the end, Billy is ready to take the test. In the test, Billy does so well in explaining to a customer how to solve his email problem but despite his good work, he forgets to press the recording button. The last task is about a sales challenge where the teams has to sign a large company so as to begin advertising with Google. This work is handed out while Billy is away, and his team does not want to do the challenge in his absence. At the Google program, Mr. Chetty is about to crown Grahams team as the victors when Nick’s team walks in dancing and throwing pizzas to everyone in the hall. After a review of the results, Nick’s team emerges the winners, and they get jobs at Google. Graham is very disappointed, and he blames his team for the failure. Zack, an obese member of Graham’s team, is fed up with the bullying, and he slaps Grahams.
The producers of this movie cleverly educate a lot of people through their work. The message in this film is that there will always be many odds to beat in life so that one can be successful. Nick and his friend had been sales people all their lives and were clearly disadvantaged in the program. They had to compete with talented young brains who had studied technology in school. The youngsters knew all the common applications used all over the world while the two best friends had not used any of them. This movie communicates a meaningful message to its viewers that it does not matter how you start, how you finish a race is the most important part of the process.
The movie was received with mixed signals, but a high percentage being all positive. People thought that Billy and Nick, among others, did a good job and that the whole Google internship program was effective. Others thought the movie was charming while a minority thought that the entire film was an advert for Google. Some even said that a real internship process is not even close to what they made it appear. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the viewers, however, cannot go unnoticed. Though the movie might have been an advertising strategy for Google, the story was well developed to relate to everybody and to hide this motive. Almost all people can relate to Billy and Nick because of an experience they have had in the past. More often than not, one finds himself in a situation where there are people with a competitive advantage. Most people chose not to compete in such ventures because they fear to lose and possible humiliation.
From the movie, The Internship, I got to learn that I should not give up in life. Life puts us in a blender for so long and once we get out of the blender, what happened inside the blender does not matter (Gujtman et al., 55). What counts is what you are going to do after you get out of a hard situation. One should not choose to stay in the position, but instead should dust off and strive to be a better person than who you were. It also teaches me that one should work very hard to be best and to get the very best out of life despite the ups and downs. Having a positive attitude in life is essential because you get to see the glass half full instead of half empty. Dwelling in your past does not help create a better future but instead you keep creating excuses for why you cannot have a good today and a better tomorrow (Moore, 71).
Another huge lesson I got to learn is that fear should be entirely discarded in life. Fear of achieving is an enormous problem to reaching your potential and goals. Just like Nick and Billy, I have allowed some opportunities that come my way to pass by. For a long time, I have played it safe instead of venturing into untested waters. Teenagers and many young adults care a lot about what impression they create, and this inhibits them. Nick was reluctant to quit his job and be an intern. Fear of the unknown is always scary and so is Nick’s initial reaction.
The movie has changed me in the sense that I was afraid of failure, especially in my History paper, and now I outgrew the fear, and I am replacing it with confidence and success. I have come out of my comfort zone and pushed myself to try more, and I answer more questions and take more tests. My teacher is very pleased with the change, but I am happier with myself. It has also made me have a more positive attitude toward life and no matter how many times I fail I keep pressing. I also have become a more social person, and I have more patience with people than I used to. Seeing how Billy and Nick were so passionate about their work has made me realize that hark work pays, and I am working harder every day. It also made me realize that everyone should be treated equally, and bullying is not a good thing as it lowers people’s self-esteem. It has made me have a huge heart, and I am more accommodating to people. The Internship is one of the best movies that anyone can every watch.
