How To Analyse Movies

1. Name and describe one cinematic characteristic or component of horror movies in one paragraph, and avoid repeating characteristics or components other students indicate, please, as horror films have many elements. I recommend reading students' replies as required in the class before selecting your component.

Evil forces. Horror movies usually revolve around supernatural forces that entail zombies, demons, ghosts, wolves, serial killers and terrifying creatures that display evil forces (lanc, 2008). These evil beings create an atmosphere of panic and terrifying emotions to the viewer
, as a result viewers get haunted and horror takes the better part of them while at the same time they get entertained. Most horror films will display evil forces by weird beings, darkness and scary sounds that frighten viewers and set up a tense-filled atmosphere (Geuens, 2000). Presence of demonic powers that usually revolve around taking life and scaring creatures and rituals create the horror atmosphere.

4. In a second paragraph, address how the cinematic characteristic or component contributes to the genre of horror films. Recall to be objective when you critically analyze this question in order to seriously consider how horror films are composed, professionally, in the industry. Think about audiences and their attraction to horror films and reasoning, which is one of the most famed genres in cinema and has been historically. You may even prefer to consider texts that were famous and became horror films as a result of the authors' talents and skills. For this activity, the text can be used as the primary resource, though using other library sources is still fine since the interesting cinematic information is in our wonderful university library. I look forward to reading each of your feedback.

Evil forces incorporates activities in the supernatural realm that live within the imagination of human beings. By incorporating evil forces in a movie, the demonic world comes to reality to the surprise of viewers, this provokes a negative emotional response among the fantasy world of viewers who get deep carried psychologically as to believe that they live in such a world (lanc, 2008) (Geuens, 2000). In contrary to the reality, the audience primal fears are evoked. The primary aim of horror films being to create fear is achieved when audience merge the real world and the film context, a psychological process that exposes the viewer’s fears, terror and nightmares of the unknown. In the legend of the seeker series, the seeker of the truth, Richard, encounters resistance and massive harm by evil forces, he finds his missions unachievable when the wizard zeddicus casts evil spell on all his ways.

1.      What is one characteristic in documentary films that is unique to the genre? Why?

Interviews, these involve a conversation between the investigating journalist and a professional usually in the field under question to extract statements or facts that are used to complement the documentary content. This characteristic is unique in that among many films genres interviews are usually not aimed at getting facts from a professional or a person involved in the topic in question. The interviewee gives direct responses on events as asked by the film maker (Nichols, 2010).

2. How does the characteristic contribute to the film genre of documentary? Why?

The genre contributes to interaction in which the documentaries give facts to the audience. When an interview is involved in a documentary, facts that are relevant to the scope under investigation are better understood on a professional perspective (Nichols, 2010). In reality this is a justification to add weight to the documentary content since the interviewee expresses facts, these may be contrary to what the film maker may express hence this may be measured as a degree of truth in the content. The film maker’s opinions may be biased while those of the interviewee taken on the ground are highly reliable (Thompson, 1985).

2.      Can documentaries and their components be measured the same as other film genres, such as dramas or mysteries or Westerns or comedies? Explain why or why not, please, using examples to support your explanations. Recall to clearly and correctly cite sources in APA format you use to help compose your reply, which should be a minimum of three paragraphs to form one paragraph per question. Though only one source is required based on our course criteria, at times, students use a few since this is an interesting discussion to research, and I welcome your feedback in detail to note what you learn about documentaries!
Documentaries cannot be measured as other genres. Firstly documentaries are based on facts and rarely rely on creativity, fiction or any other manipulation as witnessed in dramas or comedies (Nichols, 2010).  Documentaries will only cover whatever has happened and can only simulate any action that was never caught on camera as a basis to get the viewer’s understand the event, these are usually scientifically researched and verifiable processes as opposed to what might happen on a comedy, drama or on a fiction movie. In the documentary, the world’s deadliest, snakes are simulated graphically and a viewer’s get to see how they use infra-red to develop images of living objects in their vicinity, this is a fact that is scientifically verifiable as opposed to fiction movies or dramas since snakes are blind (Nichols, 2010).
Documentaries have a subject matter that is of historical, scientific or social relevance as opposed to comedies and dramas (Nichols, 2010) (Geuens, 2000). A documentary will unveil the knowledge behind an event, a phenomena or a social practice as a subject matter of great significance. Viewers learn in the process while at the same time being entertained, this is in contrary to comedies where creativity is the main theme to capture audience attention. In the documentary, the ice age, the film maker elaborates the processes behind climate change, he later elaborates this through the declining ice levels in the arctic region, in contrary a comedy like everybody loves Raymond has little subject matter of relevance, and rather it’s aimed at entertaining and no more. Documentaries will reveal scientific and historical milestones to challenge researchers who may be interested in the field (Thompson, 1985).
Documentaries are usually subject based with their target group being a group of individuals with interest in the subject and a relatively enough understanding of the field concerned (Nichols, 2010). Documentaries content is usually specialized and may not make sense to a group that has no understanding of the content matter, in the contrary comedies and dramas may have a wide target group, these groups may not need any subject matter understanding but rather to comprehend the language involved.

Select one of the following to write two paragraphs of detailed analysis about, please:

1. what is one characteristic that you have read about this week in class or studied that is typically in romantic films but not in Western movies? How is the characteristic or tool used in romantic films to manipulate audiences?

Tease, romantic films express fun in a provocative way all in a playful mood.  Western movies will usually involve a mission and a target where events occur in a preplanned manner unless where suspense is involved. Romance movies will show lovers engage in teasing while at the same time a romantic playful mood is evident, this usually is followed by good events that should not annoy the involved party, while in western movies romantic scenes are not much elaborated, in most romantic movies women tease men to the point men cry but all is in a bid to set emotions to the viewer, however as such this would be expected to end in a melancholic mood but it ends in a jovial, manner (Geuens, 2000).
In western movies teasing is displayed as a romantic move with an aim to harass, achieve an intended mission or flirting (Honthaner, 2001). Romantic moves however never express this as a social rejection tool but rather a show of love, affection and a cheerful way to create a romantic mood. In the soap opera, Paloma, teasing is used extensively to reveal love and affection in most parts, this is usually accompanied with love and usually ends in a love affair.
