how to reduce crime essay

Do current punishments reduce crime

Do you think that any of the current punishments deter or reduce crime? Why or why not? Which punishment do you think is most likely to reduce crime in society?

The current punishments never reduce crime, the reason being that use of harsh punishment may render a person more rebellious and feel segregated from the society. The most likely punishment to reduce crime in the society is by confiscating criminals property so that they remain dedicated
to the legal process and suffer a period of lack and torment. Psychologically such punishment is of higher mental harm than physical harm thus when coupled with counselling classes can be effective in correcting criminals. Moreover, criminals can be involved in community work while undergoing counselling classes, this will have a greater impact on a person and ones mindset from wrongdoing can be changed gradually.it follows by using such procedures family ties will still be intact and criminals won’t feel segregated from their families

Which alternative sanction do you think is best? Why?

The alternative sanction that I think is the best is Confiscation of criminals’ property. All or some of the property may be seized from a criminal such as cars, houses and title deeds. The reason I think this will work best is because it makes the accused to experience need and therefore is a mild but humbling practice. Some criminals who have vast wealth usually use their wealth to get out of justice and evade legal procedures.

If you had to reform the system of punishments and corrections, what would you do? Why?

I would implement professional counselling, this would ensure that criminals appreciate legal process as a way of correcting wrong doings and impacting the criminals with ethics that is conceived from their minds, and they thus become better citizens out of free will
