Your task in the term paper is to demonstrate how a particular
existing social psychological theory (of your choice) and its related findings
can help us to understand a specific applied issue or social problem. The TA
and professor will provide a few different applied issues / social problems to
choose from (in a separate document in Blackboard).
In your essay, you should show that you have read and understood
the social
psychological theory being used to analyse the applied issue. You
should go to the relevant journals and read three or four articles on the
social psychological theory that you are using (and cite them in your paper).
These articles probably will contain “basic” experiments testing the theory
itself. It will be your job to explain how the theory helps us to understand
the applied issue you are writing about.

Your essay should be divided into three sections (plus title page
and references), as described below:
i. The Applied Problem or
Social Issue. In the first section of
the essay, you should begin by outlining the specific social problem or issue
you have chosen to analyse. This section should describe the issue, giving one
or more specific examples, and explain why the issue is important (e.g., how
widespread it is, how it affects people’s lives, etc.). Include specific
references to your sources of information (e.g., newspaper articles). This
section will be approximately 1-2 double spaced pages in length.

ii. Social Psychological
Theory and Research. In the second
section of the essay, you should describe the social psychological theory that
you will be using to analyse the social problem or issue. You should review
experiments that have tested the theory and show how they support the hypotheses
derived from the theory. Make sure to cite and provide references for any
articles used. This section will be approximately 2-3 double spaced pages in
length.
iii. Analysis of the Applied
Problem or Issue. In the third and final section of the essay, you should
explain how the theory in section 2 helps us to understand the social problem
or issue in section 1. That is, you will present a social psychological
interpretation of, or perspective on, the applied issue. Focus on how the
theory explains the existence of the problem or issue (why or how the problem
developed and why it is maintained). This section will be approximately 2-3
double spaced pages in length.
Finally, at the end of the essay, you should
append a reference section that lists the sources of all materials (and only
those materials) cited in your essay. Use APA style (edition 6) for formatting
your essay and references.
