The American Romantic Movement

Positive effects
The Romantic Movement is one of the strongest forces that helped shape this nation. It has contributed immensely to the development of the modern society in which every person has equal rights and freedoms. It contributed to the northern American thinking that slavery was against the human nature. Democracy and the modern international relations stem from the understanding that humans are equal regardless of their race, color, religion, or language. The Romantic Movement led to the development
and evolution of the American culture where the focus is on self-betterment and an understanding of the natural world. The women are liberated through the thinking brought about by this movement (Brinkley, 2010).
The Romantic Movement contributes to the unity of the country. The nation continues to flourish and is currently the greatest nation in the world. Alan Brinkley in his book the unfinished nation credits Romantic Movement for the end of the cold war and the rise of capitalism. The movement led to an increase of interest in science and technology. It contributed to the increased importance of education in the modern society (Brinkley, 2010).
Negative effects
The liberation of the spirit and the focus on the pleasures of the flesh has led to many evils in the society. There has been a high decline in the influence of religion. An understanding of the natural world has resulted in the discovery of a means to destroy the human race. Nuclear bomb and other advanced weapons make this a possibility. The resulting increased emphasizes in individual leads to the decline of society as a unit. Each individual is striving to achieve the best for him or herself. The nation has many enemies resulting from its effort to protect the liberties and freedoms throughout the world. The nation through civil societies and military intervention where necessary, protects the sanctity of human life throughout the globe. This creates many enemies like the al-Qaida who bombed New York on 9/11 and other embassies around the world (Brinkley, 2010).
