Critical analysis

The physical, group, and poignant interactions experienced during sports enhance social development, especially among children. Sports offer numerous opportunities for non-formal education, which enable the creation of an inclusive social environment. The article Girl Unprotected narrates events that look like they are happening in a movie set. The story involves Mike Danton who is charged with conspiracy to murder his agent and longtime
Coach David Frost. Sporting activities led to close personal relationships amongst the individuals involved. Whereas trust is essential while training for success, it also increases vulnerability for sexual harassment and abuse (Laura).
Frost true character reveals itself when he punches a young boy in the face when he comes out of the ice during a hockey game. He is also charged with forging a signature on a document. This causes his to be banned from coaching with the Toronto area. The story takes a twist when he convinces five of the players in his former team to follow him out of the Toronto area to Deseronto. He serves there as an assistant coach before rising to the position of head coach in unclear circumstances. Despite the unclear circumstances, the Quinte Hawks start to win. At the time, he shared resident at a local inn with some of the players he came with from Toronto (Laura). The five players that Frost convinced to follow him to Deseronto were between the ages 14 to 20. It is clear that some of the members in his team were not old enough to legal make decisions, such as moving by themselves, however, frost convinced them despite the resistance from their parents.
Frost lived with some of the player in the same room. This is something off the norm because at his age, Frost preferred the company of young teens against the company of his age mates. Although some of the players lived with their family and friends away from the hotel, activities, such as parties took place at Frosts resident in the hotel. While a man the age of Frost living with young teens in a common room is off, the event that blows his activities in the open is when he convinces one of his players to change his last name and disown his parents. The coach and the five players he moved with to Deseronto take the form of a cult with the coach as the head and unquestionable leader. The changing of one of the players name and making them leave their homes is a sign of the degree to which Frost held the students both emotional and psychologically (Laura).
The cult-like nature of the relationship between the coach and his players is clear during the hearing of the case where Danton is accused of conspiring to kill Frost. Danton pleads guilty to the charges but later denies ever trying or planning to kill Frost. The information revealed in the case is enough to generate enough interest to warrant Frost investigation. Police later discover that Frosts activities in the hotel room involve sexual harassment of not only his players, but also their girlfriends. Some of the girls accept having group sex with the players in Frost room but deny that Frost is involved in the activities. Most of the other players also deny the involvement of frost in any other activities, which is further proof of the cult-like nature of their relationship (Laura). One player, Ian LaRoque who is a friend of two players whom Frost is accused of engaging in sexual activities with confirms under oath the nature of their relationship. According to Ian, Frost regularly engaged in group sex with the two and their girlfriends and often talked about it in the bus and the changing room.
The court and the public in general do not seem to agree, however, it is clear that Frost victimized his players for years for the smallest of reasons. Frost hitting a young boy for making a mistake during a game is clear evidence about his nature. He is a short tempted man who will just as easily assault a player physically as he does emotionally and sexually. The four witnesses in the case, who include two girls involved in the group sex and two players not involved in the group sex reveal a Frost who publically humiliated his players for the slightest mistakes, which left every around him walking on egg shells least he gets offended and humiliate them. Frost behavior, such as the public humiliation of his player for the slightest mistakes provided the perfect cover for his devious activities. This manipulative behavior kept the players silent for fear of humiliation (Laura).
Frost actions are not rape; however, he abused his power over the boys as their coach to coerce them into sexual activities. The boys in their attempt to please their coach coerce their girlfriends into engaging in group sex. The fact that the girls think engaging in group sex with members of a team is normal outlines the extent to which these activities are prevalent not only in the team which Frost heads, but in many other teams in other parts of the country. The Danton and Frost case bring into focus the blind religious faith that many Canadians have in hockey. The activities in the case involve minors and take place in hotel rooms. Despite this, neither the parents nor the hotel owner or workers report any unusual activities despite the many hints obvious to them. Frost later gets approval to coach at the NHL level despite having a history of assault and forgery. A majority of people are so passionate about the game that they are willing to overlook some of the events in a player or coachs past (Laura).
The cult-like nature of the relationship between the coach and his players perhaps reflects the degree to which the Canadians are willing to support the hockey game. Frost receives a NHL agent license after forging a league document and hitting a boy, the judges are willing to do away with the cases against Frost involving his assault of the girls on grounds of insufficient evidence (Laura). The players whom Frost is accused of sexually assaulting are not willing to admit these in court despite their other team members testifying this as true from the many conversation they had in the bus and the changing rooms. The Canadians must reevaluate their commitment to the Hockey game because the blind following of the game affects decisions involving the game at all levels including personal, family, and court.
