After the World War II, many soldiers who participated in the war returned home and got married. This led to a great rise in the birth rate from 1946 to 1964. It is estimated that 1 million children were born in 1946, compared to 1945. Because of this “baby boom, all children born during this period (1946-1964) are called baby boomers in the United States. About 74 million people were born between the years 1946- 1964.
Due to the ever-increasing health care cost, future cost projections are based on this generation
. The impact on the health care costs has been alluded to this aging population. Studies have shown that baby boomers will develop a disability as they age than the older generations. It has been discovered that this generation is living longer than the older one but its health condition has deteriorated. While studies show that they are less likely to smoke, or suffer from heart problems, there is a high likelihood of this group to become overweight, have diabetes or their blood pressure to rise than the previous generation at the same age.
Another study reveals that the population between 40 64 years has disability level increased. It has identified a relationship between obesity and disability. Between 2000 and 2008, the population between 55 and 64 (oldest baby boomers) had shown an increase in disability that was a complete opposite to those aged over 85 at the same period. Given the advancement in the health sector, researchers had expected this generation to be doing better than the older ones.
To meet the health care needs of the baby boomers, the government needs a change in its public health policy. By doing so, the government will need not worry about meeting the financial needs of this big number of elders in the near future. This therefore calls for the government to address the 2030 problem which involves the challenges of meeting these health care needs in 2030. This generation will be 64 to 84 years (young old) and they will be about 61 million people compared to those born earlier (oldest old) who will number 9 million (Martini, Garrett, Lindquist, & Isham, 2007).
