motivation and participation in class

Part 1
The argument of Michele on motivation and participation in class are essential in successful teaching. Teachers play a critical role in enhancing motivation and engagement practices all through their lessons. Michele considers motivation and commitment to be a teacher’s initiative as he reports “It becomes a teacher problem when teachers do not appropriately
motivate and engage students” (Par. 1). His argument on a teacher’s incorporation of the four Cs in the classroom is significant in motivating the students. Team building activities are essential learning as reported by Michele. The significance of the concept of the achievement of learning success is based on a teacher’s maintenance of team building practices. He says “Team building activities contribute to learning in that it creates relationships and a safe environment for learning” (Par. 2). However, Michele considers team building to affect negatively learning if not held constant. However, Michele’s work seemingly leans on the teacher’s responsibility to the maintenance of team building, motivation and engagement in the classroom, leaving out the core participants, students.
Part 2
Billy believes the teacher is the ring leader in this driving force. The two fail to consider the holistic nature of learning as students are social, political, economic and biological beings. The structure of the students’ needs to be considered hence motivation begins at the student’s level to the teacher. Therefore, the teacher’s contribution is not sufficient as the students need to be self-motivated and engaged to achieve their desired goal. Billy believes there is no way team building can adversely affect learning as it helps in building a community of learners. He reports “I do not think that any of these activities will hinder learning” (Par. 4).
